McKenzie Bridge Airport Work Party, Oregon

June 1, 2019, McKenzie Bridge Airport (00S), McKenzie Bridge, Oregon

The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODA) and the Recreational Aviation Foundation (RAF) collaborate to undertake the maintenance of the McKenzie Bridge State Airport (00S).

A volunteer work party will be held at McKenzie Bridge State Airport on Saturday, June 1, 2019.  The objectives will be to demonstrate our commitment to the airfield by making it safer and more attractive for the recreational aviation community.

The general tasks to be accomplished are:

1)   Repair damage to the airfield surface caused by rodents and wildlife.  We currently have commitments from members to bring tractors with buckets to help move materials from a nearby stockpile.  We will require some folks with shovels and garden rakes to distribute the dirt and smooth the ground surface.

2)   Cut down the weeds at the tie-down and camping area.  We will require a couple of folks with string trimmers or mowers to accomplish this.

3)   Place and paint runway edge markers.  We need some white paint, brushes and several painters.

4)   Clear the brush from the over-run area at the West end of the airfield. This can be accomplished by the use of long arm loppers and/or chain saws.

5)   Clear some brush around signs.  Once again, this can be accomplished by the use of long arm loppers and/or chain saws.

If anyone has additional suggestions, please share them and we’ll see what we can accomplish.

We plan to have a potluck meal early Saturday evening.  Plan to bring food to share.

If you are interested, the adjacent McKenzie River trail offers some brilliant single-track mountain biking and hiking.  It could be possible to arrange for small group transport up river and you can ride back down 10 miles or so to the airfield.  You can also enjoy a great half-day float trip on the river.

You can camp overnight on the field, or in the USFS campground across the road.  Note that USFS has informed us that the potable water will be turned off during our stay, so bring plenty of your own water.  Alternatively, you can ‘glamp’ at one of the many lodges and B&Bs along the McKenzie River.  There are a lot of diversions in the area to keep you entertained for the rest of the weekend.  For more info, check out: http://visitmckenzieriver.com/oregon/

If you plan to fly in to help, please arrive Friday night, or before 09:00 on Saturday.  Once we start operating the tractors to repair the airstrip surface, it will be difficult to accommodate a lot of aircraft arrivals.

Please feel free to provide feedback if you have any ideas on how to make this activity most successful.  Your support will be most welcome.  Further details will follow closer to June.
