RAF BACKCOUNTRY ETIQUETTE TEAM (BET) LAUNCHED
In response to the increasing usage of our nation’s backcountry, and concern over preservation of aviation access, the RAF established a new Backcountry Etiquette Team (BET). The team’s goal is to strengthen the culture of stewardship using multilateral messaging regarding respectful backcountry flying practices.
The 10 member team was introduced at the May RAF education conference by Chair Lynn Mareth and includes RAF supporters from Oregon to the Carolinas and Maine, representing wide geographic diversity. Mareth also announced the RAF’s new partnership with Tread Lightly!, a nonprofit organization that promotes responsible motorized access.
Scott Haas, the US Forest Service National Dispersed Recreation Program Manager, attended the two-day conference, and indicated his willingness to partner with the RAF, as well.
AOPA is planning a story on this RAF initiative, according to Kollin Stagnito, AOPA Senior Vice President of Media. “Kollin seems thrilled to promote our cause,” Mareth said, adding, “He pointed out that the RAF and AOPA missions – though different – are aligned. AOPA works to protect our freedom to fly, and we are about protecting airstrips.”
The BET team hopes to elevate awareness among the variety of pilots – in age and level of experience – who already access the backcountry or hope to. Team members point out that it just takes one bad actor to jeopardize access for other conscientious pilots.
“We received a lot of great feedback on what we are trying to accomplish and are excited about our new partnership with Tread Lightly!” Mareth added.
