IL: HENDERSON FIELD FLY-IN, CAMPOUT STARGAZING WEEKEND
Oct 17, 2025 8:00AM—Oct 19, 2025 5:00PM
Henderson Field (95IL) in Southern Illinois is again hosting the Fly-in, Campout, Stargazing Weekend on October 17-19 in one of the darkest sky regions in Illinois. The Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois will be present with telescopes including one with a 30″ mirror! Major constellations, the Milky Way, and views of Saturn, Neptune, Uranus, and Jupiter are likely subjects, among various nebulae and other attractions.
The event starts when you get there. A porta-potty will be in place by Friday October 17 and there is access to water. Driving in and campers will be accommodated but there are no hookups. Flying in, camping, and enjoying the stars are entirely free. Donations to cover the porta potty and other expenses would be appreciated.
Pilots must review the Henderson Field safety briefing on the Airfield Guide before flying in. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
FRIDAY / SATURDAY – Arrive early and enjoy the time socializing, fishing, swimming, or exploring the area. Meals are on your own, however there will be a charcoal grill/smoker available for use. Saturday afternoon will feature a local geology primer on Garden of the Gods, Hicks Dome, and other features that make this area special. Enjoy stargazing and the telescopes Saturday night and sit around the RAF fire ring and discuss potential RAF projects in the area.
SUNDAY – breakfast on your own (coffee provided), with optional fly-outs over SI and the historic Giant City airstrip. Stay as long as you want. If you have questions, or to RSVP, contact Dave Warner: dwarner@theraf.org. The rain date for this event is October 24-26.
