ALASKA’S PEAVINE AIRSTRIP SEASONAL MAINTENANCE COMPLETES

Volunteers flew to Alaska’s Peavine airstrip in Wrangell-St. Elias National Preserve on July 12. They removed brush and completed airstrip maintenance on the gravel runway. “Thirteen airplanes and twenty-one volunteers were on site,” RAF Alaska Liaison Stef Goza reported. “Volunteers came from a variety of groups including RAF supporters, EAA Chapter 42, and Pioneers of Alaska members,” she added. Thanks to organizing efforts by RAF Alaska Liaison Al Clayton, the group was joined by several members of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians from Australia and Germany.

The scenic airstrip lies at the base of snow-capped mile-high cliffs. It does not appear on sectionals, nor the Airfield Guide, but is located at an elevation of 2,000 feet about 14 miles east of McCarthy on the Chitistone River. Its coordinates are 61°27.38’N/142°28.35’W. There are two rustic NPS public use cabins and a pit toilet nearby.

Those Alaskans sure are a hardy bunch! Nothing but respect for how they fly and what they can do when they get there!
