IL: 2024 HENDERSON FIELD STARGAZING CAMPOUT
Oct 11, 2024 12:00PM—Oct 13, 2024 12:00PM
If you read the article by Julie Summers Walker in the August issue of AOPA Pilot on Starry, starry nights, you might be looking for a dark sky community or place to fly in and enjoy a night sky full of stars. You don’t have to go far. Henderson Field (95IL) is again hosting a fly-in camp out and stargazing weekend October 11-12 in one of the darkest sky regions in Illinois. The Astronomical Association of Southern Illinois will be present with several telescopes and their special insight into the cosmos.
The event starts when you get there. A porto-potty will be in place by Friday October 11 and there is access to water. Flying in, camping and enjoying the stars is entirely free.
An RSVP would be appreciated. Pilots must review the Henderson Field safety briefing in the Airfield Guide before flying in.
FRIDAY / SATURDAY – Arrive early and enjoy the time socializing, fishing, or exploring the area. Meals are on your own, however there will be a charcoal grill/smoker available for use. A local historian will be on hand Saturday afternoon to regale you with local lore and tales of what makes this area special. Enjoy stargazing and the telescopes Saturday night and sit around the RAF fire ring and discuss potential projects in the area.
SUNDAY – breakfast on your own (coffee provided), with optional fly-out over SI and old Giant City airstrip. Stay as long as you want. If you have any questions, or would like to RSVP, please contact Dave Warner: dwarner@theraf.org. The rain date for this event is October 26.
