VOLUNTEER WITH THE RAF IN 2025

Are you passionate about preserving special places to fly and want to get more involved with the RAF? We’d love to have you join our enthusiastic and dedicated group of volunteers! 


We are currently seeking a variety of volunteers to help us achieve the RAF mission of preserving, improving and creating airstrips for recreational access. If you are new to the RAF, The RAF Way video will give you a taste of the volunteer experience. Volunteers work hard, have fun, and enjoy making friends with pilots and non-pilots alike.


State Liaison Volunteer

The State Liaison is a key point of contact for matters related to the RAF’s mission in their respective state. Some states have more than one Liaison. Our greatest need for Liaisons is in: Arizona, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and Northern California. We are always looking for passionate individuals to help in any state, so if you don’t see yours listed above, please don’t hesitate to reach out.



Admin Volunteer

Do you enjoy working behind the scenes on administrative tasks? We are looking for a few individuals to work with RAF’s headquarters on special projects. If you are savvy with spreadsheets, enjoy multi-tasking, and have great communication skills, we’d love to hear from you!


Tech Volunteer

Do you have tech skills to share? We are seeking a tech volunteer to help with activities related to our email marketing platform, CRM, website, and more. Give us a shout if computers are your thing!


Vice President of Appreciation Volunteer

VPs of Appreciation are vital to the organization and recognize supporters who contribute financially to the RAF. If you enjoy writing thank you notes, we’re looking for a few new helpers to round out our wonderful VP team.


Fulfillment Volunteer

If you live in Bozeman, Montana, and would like to help once a week with mailing out RAF merchandise from the RAF Outfitter online store, we’re looking for a few individuals to help package up goods, ranging from hoodies to windsocks!

STEVE JONES

Steve Jones was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio just an hour from the birthplace of aviation. He fell in love with airplanes at an early age and has been flying ever since. That passion grew exponentially when he landed off-airport in a tailwheel airplane for the first time and discovered the world of backcountry aviation. He first encountered the RAF while attending a “Peaks to Pavement” seminar in 2019, where he met Ohio State Liaison Christine Mortine. Since that time he has enjoyed supporting the RAF including getting his hands dirty helping with campsite improvements at Noble County Airport. He has also supported technology projects for the HQ team and RAF volunteers. As a State Liaison for Ohio he will be focused on initiating new grant projects, adding more recreational airports in Ohio to the RAF Airfield Guide, and increasing RAF engagement and collaboration. Steve is a graduate of The Ohio State University with a BA in Aviation Management and is a loyal Ohio State Buckeyes football fan. He works in Flight Operations for a large private aviation company where he has worked for the past twenty years. VOLUNTEERS IMPROVE CAMPING AT NEW HAMPSHIRE AIRPARK

RAF New Hampshire Liaison John Meade coordinated a work party over the June 13-14 weekend at Hawthorne-Feather Airpark, 8B1. The paved 3,260-ft runway lies in a forested valley three miles south of Hillsborough, New Hampshire. Additionally, there is a 2,000 foot adjoining turf landing area to the East of the paved runway. The airpark is privately owned, but is open to the public, and camping is allowed. A group of 11 volunteers showed up to help, including RAF Director Bill Brine. The group helped open up five campsites on the southern end of the airfield, installed a commemorative flagpole, and weed-whacked along drainage ditches and a walking trail. “With volunteers from six different states and great weather, this was a special day, with plenty accomplished,” Meade said. UBCP HELPS RAF REOPEN TAYLOR FLAT AND "EXPAND THE MAP"

Taylor Flat Airstrip, just a stone’s throw from the wild and scenic Green River as it carves through spectacular Utah canyons, is officially reopened. Thanks to a cooperative effort between the RAF and Utah Back Country Pilots (UBCP), Taylor Flat Airstrip, TF9, is one more recreational destination pilots can once again enjoy as the RAF works on Expanding The Map ! In 2023, dialog was initiated with the BLM to reopen the airstrip. Daggett County got involved, and RAF Utah Liaison Wendy Lessig navigated the required NEPA process. Lessig was instrumental in preparing a right of way (ROW) lease agreement application, coordinating between Daggett County, the BLM, and other stakeholders, and gathering information to assist the BLM throughout the required Environmental Assessment. “Thanks to Wendy taking action as the RAF Liaison, and her professional persistence following through the lengthy public review process, Taylor Flat Airstrip will reopen as another unique backcountry destination," RAF President Bill McGlynn said. The RAF and UBCP teamed up May 9 to revitalize the airstrip, which had lain dormant for thirty years. “The work party was a resounding success,” Lessig reports. ”We are grateful for the twenty-five volunteers who hand-picked rocks from the airstrip, and used them to mark the runway corners and threshold. “
