VOLUNTEERS DIG DEEP TO MAINTAIN FACILITIES AT TRIGGER GAP

It all started years ago by building a relationship between The Nature Conservancy and the RAF. Arkansas pilots and RAF Liaisons Harper Goodwin and Dave Powell connected with the regional folks at The Nature Conservancy, the organization known for its efforts to advance effective, lasting land and environmental conservation. Shortly, they found common ground between TNC and the RAF, as stewards and protectors of the outdoor places we visit.
The RAF partnered with Fly Oz, and got enthusiastic support from TNC to shape a new 3,000-ft airfield from the beautiful grassy plateau above the Kings River on TNC land, just 29 nm east of Bentonville’s Louise Thaden field. It’s a popular destination for camping, hiking, and local outfitters can arrange float trips. Stay awhile, and you will likely make new like-minded friends as you gather around the evening campfire.
The RAF helped fund the aesthetic pavilion built by volunteers, many of whom flew in from afar to help. Other amenities have been added for campers’ convenience, like a fire ring, picnic tables, and solar toilet.
And when firewood needs to be restocked, or the batteries way down in the solar toilet need replacing, it’s willing volunteers like Goodwin and Powell who roll up their sleeves, and lean into the task. RAF Chairman John McKenna said, “The not so glamorous job of changing the batteries in the “pit” of the solar outhouse embodies the RAF willingness to serve.”
The RAF and Fly Oz invite you to explore Trigger Gap, and the several other backcountry airfields in Ozark country. Thaden field, VBT is a great place to stage your travels.
