SAN RAFAEL TRAVEL MANAGEMENT PLAN RECOGNIZES AIRSTRIPS
On December 31, 2024 the BLM published the official Record of Decision that recognizes airstrips within the San Rafael Swell region of south central Utah. In summary, the decision retains aircraft-only access to Hidden Splendor and McKay Flat airstrips; Cliff Dweller and Sagebrush Bench airstrips are open to aircraft and OHVs, since these airstrips are on roads. The BLM added language that roads that are designated as “OHV-open” can also be used by aircraft.
RAF Utah Liaison and Utah Back Country Pilots board member Wendy Lessig has worked diligently to monitor the BLM planning process, and tirelessly encouraged public comments. “No airstrips were lost or denied in the TMP process and decision. All four of the airstrips in the San Rafael Swell were recognized by the BLM,” Lessig said, adding, “I’m so thrilled that I could cry!”
Lessig points out another reason to celebrate: This is the first Travel Management Plan (resulting in the final decision) in which the BLM formally recognizes backcountry airstrips in Utah.
RAF Chairman John McKenna said, “This outcome is the end result of ongoing involvement from the aviation community. The RAF is pleased to have our RAF Liaison Wendy Lessig at the forefront of this work.”
The San Rafael Decision Record was signed by Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Land and Minerals Steven Feldgus and appears here. A table showing the four airstrips appears on page 558.
