PHASE TWO IMPROVEMENTS AT NOBLE COUNTY AIRPORT

Ohio’s Noble County Airport, (I10) lies within Wolf Run State Park, 64 nm ESE of Columbus. The fly-in only campground, situated on a beautiful lake, “is the only such destination in Ohio,” RAF Ohio Liaison Christine Mortine said. She was impressed with its recreational opportunities, and in April was granted funds for two equipment carts and an RAF fire ring to add to the two existing fire rings.

“The Wolf Run Fly In Camp Area has proven to be a highly energized project with mounting support and enthusiasm,” Christine said, leading to Phase Two improvements with what she calls “full throttle involvement” of the Noble County Board of Trustees, Noble County Commissioner, Ohio State Parks Ohio Department of Natural Resources, and RAF.

Thanks to RAF grant funds, construction will begin for a Pilot Shelter/Storage Room near the camp area to provide cover for picnic tables and storage for carts, kayak paddles, lifejackets, and bikes. At least three wooden tent platforms will be added. The outhouses will be improved, and the tie-down area will be graded for proper drainage. She also budgeted for the installation of a camp visitor registration box. “The portion of the campground on the airport side is beautifully private,” she said.

The project should be completed by August. See airfield.guide for information.

RAF Michigan Liaisons Tanmoy Ganguly and Scott Anttila met with district U.S. Forest Service staff prior to starting work at Lost Creek airstrip, now MI45, (formerly 5Y4) in the Huron-Manistee National Forest in north-central Michigan. “We had a very constructive discussion about what the RAF does, and what we envision for future amenities at Lost Creek airstrip,” Ganguly said. The mid-August work weekend attracted 16 aircraft and 20 volunteers, including new MI Ambassador Ryan Minnick, MI Ambassador Ehsan Hamtaei, and IN Liaison Bill Steinmetz, many of whom enjoyed camping overnight in the forested setting. The crew was joined by nearby residents who donated their time, tools, and machinery to help and provided snacks.

Nestled in among awe-inspiring mountains, Glacier Creek (KGZ) airstrip is 15 nm east of McCarthy in Alaska’s Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. On July 11, a work party drawing 25 volunteers was held there, led by RAF Alaska Liaison Stef Goza, her husband Randy, and Alaska Ambassador Bri Norby. They were joined by a group of National Park Service maintenance crew members who’d been flown in the night before and cleared the trail from the airstrip to the cabin before volunteers arrived.
