RAF AND AIRPORT VOLUNTEERS IMPROVE WOLF RUN FLY-IN CAMPGROUND

On November 2, four airport volunteers joined 14 RAF supporters at Wolf Run Fly-In Campground adjacent to the Noble County Airport for a work day close to 9 a.m. Those arriving in seven aircraft had to wait for the morning fog to clear. “It was one of the most spectacular fall days of the season,” RAF Ohio Liaison and organizer Christine Mortine said.

Volunteers used chainsaws and filled firewood caches throughout the campground, and cleared fallen trees from the path to the campground. They cleaned outhouses and installed a new windsock. Thanks in part to an RAF grant and generous local in-kind donations, materials for a planned shelter, fire ring and tent platforms were provided.

With the support of Airport Manager Ed Crock, lumber for the tent platforms was delivered to the campground and the post holes were augered. Volunteers built two more tent platforms overlooking the lake, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Mortine reports that now visitors can enjoy camping in these pristine spots. She provided hotdogs and hamburgers for lunch, cooked over the newly placed RAF fire ring.

“Everyone was super impressed with the RAF fire ring, and it’s the first thing campers see as they round the trail,” she said. The area for the forthcoming pilot shelter/storage area was completely cleared, ready for Crock to deliver gravel for site preparation.

Work continued until 4 p.m. when everyone departed safely. “Aside from a few splinters, all work was accomplished safely,” Mortine said.

“Wolf Run Fly In Campground is a good example of collaboration between a county

airport, the RAF, and Ohio Department of Natural Resources, along with generous support from Crock Construction,” she added. Work has been scheduled to stain and preserve the platforms, and continue making improvements.
