FEATURED AIRSTRIP: NOBLE COUNTY, OHIO

Each month we highlight an airstrip with hopes that you will get out and enjoy these special places. This month, we’re featuring Noble County, Ohio.
Visitors to Noble County Airport, I10 adjacent to Wolf Run State Park Campground, now enjoy even more camping amenities, thanks to RAF grants, the Noble County Airport Board, and the efforts of volunteers organized by RAF Ohio Liaison Christine Mortine.
The airport lies in the Appalachian Plateau of southeastern Ohio, about three miles north of Caldwell. The 3,800-foot asphalt runway ends at the north edge of 220-acre Wolf Run Lake, where there is a camping area dedicated to visitors flying in. Pilots enjoy a long season of scenic fly-in camping and recreation at this spot.
Two phases of significant improvements have been completed recently. The airport accomplished grading, drainage, and leveling of the turf aircraft parking area on the southeast side of the runway, where campers can tie down for a stay. Water is available at the airport office building. Campers may use the RAF branded Gorilla carts to haul gear the short way through the wooded trail to the large camping area on the lake shore. Volunteers improved the outhouse structure, provided by the Noble County Airport, and installed a storage structure. Picnic tables and tent platforms have been constructed, and volunteers stock firewood ready for you to enjoy an evening around the new fire ring. Pitch your tent and toss your line out for a chance to reel in a bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass or the elusive rainbow trout!

Come and enjoy spectacular scenery at this primitive camping area, easily accessible from the runway. Mortine says, “Please be sure to sign in at the box so the Airport Authority knows its value to recreational pilots.”

Been there many times never camped overnight just so quiet and peaceful sitting by the lake. My favorite place to fly. Hardly ever anyone there. Can’t imagine why more pilot’s don’t take advantage of it only twice in the countless times I’ve been there encountered someone. I no longer fly my most treasured memories flying to wolf run from Beach City
Vince, thank you for this heartfelt comment. It truly is a lovely spot, and a real camping fly in right here in Ohio. I’m hot to improve the out houses! 🙂 Christine
